What a peculiar tale. Such fascination with fat Sages? But maybe their waistline is not the point here, and the Talmud is hinting at something very deep…
“Hey buddy, like to put on tefillin?” “Dear Jew, did you put on tefillin yet today?” It would seem that calls such as these have become routine, an inseparable part of public life on the streets of Eretz Yisrael on Fridays. The sight of a bearded Chassid standing on the street and offering tefillin to passersby is part of the Israeli street scene for over fifty years now
If someone purchased a can of soda from a machine — or any other item from a vending machine — and more than one can of soda came out, the halachah is that they may take only one can, as the other can does not belong to them. Taking an extra can is a violation of three mitzvos — the positive and negative commandments of hashavas aveida, returning lost objects, as well as the negative commandment of “Do not steal.”
If someone ate something and ended up with a stomachache, no one would say that the upset stomach just happened randomly.
Some weeks ago, I had the “privilege” of spending Shabbos at an NYC hospital with a relative. In what they call the “Chessed Room,” we managed to put together a tight minyan. There was 1 Lubavitcher, 2 Litvisher guys, a Skverer Chassid, a Satmerer, two “Young Israel” style guys, and a few more Chassidishe Yidden although I didn’t manage to figure out their exact affiliatio

On Tuesday, the 11th of Iyar 5749, the two chief rabbis of Eretz Yisrael came to visit the Rebbe. They entered the Rebbe’s room – the Gan Eden Haelyon — and were greeted by the Rebbe with great honor. The conversation went on for a long time, discussing a wide range of Torah topics. At the center of the discussion was an extensive exchange about the Emuna in Moshiach’s arrival.

Two families went out on a hiking trip in the Alps – one Jewish and one (l’havdil) Gentile. The Jewish family came fully equipped… Four different kinds of sandwiches for each family member, bags of Bamba, Bissli, and popcorn for the kids, chocolates and nuts for the adults, cartons of vacuum-packed milk, and a wide variety of breakfast cereals, and more and more…
It was 5724/1964. Rabbi E.L. Klein, a talmid chacham and yirei shomayim traveled to the United States on a fundraising trip for a network of boys’ elementary school yeshivos.
Rabbi Michoel Green returns to the scene and looks for direction we can take, going forward from the horrific tragedy at Chabad of Poway.
