Public Letter from 25 Adar 5751 — March 11 1991 (2)

A famous teaching of the Baal Shem Tov has it, that “Once there was a seven-year war between two gentile [kings] so a Tzadik would be able to hear a melody from the war marches which he used to serve Hashem.” (Kesser Shem Tov, Hosafos, Chapter 150)  In this next part of the letter, the Rebbe expounds on the historic message this miraculous war carries for the spiritual mission of the Jewish people:

In the course of the current year (5751) which Jews have (by way of acronym) designated and assigned: ho’yo tehei shnas ar’enu nifla’os (“It shall surely be a year of revealed wonders”); as also during the latter part of the preceding year (5750) – which was likewise designated ho’yo tehei shnas nissim (“It shall surely be a year of miracles”),

בְּמֶשֶׁךְ פוּן דֶעם יָאר — אוֹיף וֶועלְכְן אִידְן גִיבְּן דֶעם נָאמֶען אוּן סִימָן: “הָיֹה תְּהֵא שְׁנַת נִפְלָאוֹת אַרְאֶנּוּ”, אוּן נָאךְ פַאר דֶעם, בַּיְים סוֹף פוּן פַארְגַאנְגֶענֶעם יָאר, בַּאצֵיְיכְנְט פוּן אִידְן מִיטְן סִימָן “הָיֹה תְּהֵא שְׁנַת נִסִּים”

we frequently emphasized the timeliness of our Sages’ prediction (in Yalkut Shimoni on Isaiah, #499) concerning wars that would break out in the specified region of the world, which will signal the near arrival of the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach.

— אִיז פִיל מָאל בַּאטָאנְט גֶעוָוארְן בְּנוֹגֵעַ וָואס חַזַ”ל הָאבְּן פָאראוֹיְס גֶעזָאגְט (אִין יַלְקוּט שִׁמְעוֹנִי יְשַׁעֲיָ’ רֶמֶז תצט) וֶועגְן דִי מִלְחָמוֹת וֶועלְכֶע וֶועלְן פָארְקוּמֶען אִין יֶענֶעם טֵיְיל פוּן וֶועלְט, אַז דָאס זַיְינֶען פוּן דִי סִימָנִים אַז אָט-אָט קוּמְט דִי גְּאוּלָה הָאֲמִתִּית וְהַשְּׁלֵימָה דוּרְך מָשִׁיחַ צִדְקֵנוּ.

In light of the aforementioned events and miracles, one should become even more strongly aware that this is the time of urgent preparedness for the fulfillment of the prophecy “and the kingdom shall be G-d’s,”

אוּן אִין אָנְבְּלִיק פוּן דִי אוֹיבְּנדֶערמָאנטֶע גֶעשֶׁעֶענִישְׁן אוּן נִסִּים, דַארְף נָאךְ שׁטַארְקֶער וֶוערְן דֶער בַּאוּואוסְטזַיְין, אַז דָאס אִיז דִי צַיְיט פוּן הֲכָנָה קְרוֹבָה צוּ דֶער עֶרְפִילוּנְג פוּן דֶער הַבְטָחָה “וְהָיְתָה לַה’ הַמְּלוּכָה”

 when all nations will recognize that “this mansion (the world) has a Master” a recognition that will lead “all of them to call upon the Name of G-d, to worship Him with one consent.”

 וֶוען אַלֶע פֶעלְקֶער וֶועלְן זַיְין אִיבֶּערצַיְיגְט אַז “יֵשׁ בַּעַל הַבַּיִת לְבִירָה זוֹ” אוּן דִי אַנֶערְקֶענוּנְג וֶועט זֵיי בְּרֶענְגֶען “לִקְרֹא כֻּלָּם בְּשֵׁם ה’ לְעׇבְדוֹ שְׁכֶם אֶחָד”.

Especially that, as mentioned, we are now approaching the month of Nissan (from the Hebrew word nes, a miracle).

וּבִּפְרַט, וִוי דֶערְמָאנְט, וֶוען מֶען דֶערְנֶעֶענְטֶערְט זִיךְ צוּ חֹדֶשׁ נִיסָן — פוּן לָשׁוֹן נֵס —

 Moreover, as our Sages point out, the name of the month (by its two letters nun, making it also readable forward and backward) indicates a “multiple of miracles” and “miracles within miracles”. Thus it is certain that G-d will show even greater miracles than heretofore.

אוּן נָאךְ מֶער, וִוי חַזַ”ל דַיְיטְן אָן, אַז “נִיסָן” (מִיט צְוֵויי נוּנְ”ן) בַּאוַויְיזְט אוֹיף “נִסֵּי נִסִּים” (וְ”נֵס בְּתוֹךְ נֵס”) – אִיז דָאך זִיכֶער, אַז דֶער אוֹיבֶּערשׁטֶער וֶועט וַויְיזְן נָאךְ גְרֶעסֶערֶע נִסִּים;

Knowing that these events are a prelude to Moshiach’s imminent arrival, are also a call to action:

And particularly when Jews also increase their own efforts to elevate their daily Jewish conduct in observance of Torah and mitzvos to the level of the supra-natural,

אוּן בַּאזוּנְדֶערְס, וֶוען אִידְן זַיְינֶען זִיךְ מִשְׁתַּדֵּל אַז אוֹיךְ זֵייעֶר טָאג-טֶעגְלֶעכֶע אוֹיְפְפִירוּנְג אִין אִידִשְׁקַיְיט: תּוֹרָה אוּן מִצְוֹת — זָאל זַיְין אִין אַן אוֹפֶן פוּן “נֵס” — אוֹיפְגֶעהוֹיבְּן אַלְץ מֶער אוּן מֶער,

with everyone, man and woman, elevated above their natural tendencies and habits, in the area of Torah study and doing Mitzvos with hiddur (excellence) in a manner of “multiple miracles,” striving ever higher and still higher.

אַז יֶעדֶער אֵיינֶער אוּן אֵיינֶע שֶׁיִ[חְיֶ’] הוֹיבְּט זִיךְ אוֹיף הֶעכֶער פוּן דִי גֶעוֹואויְנְהַיְיטְן בִּיז אִיצְט בְּלִמּוּד הַתּוֹרָה וְהִדּוּר בְּקִיּוּם הַמִּצְוֹת, בִּיז אִין אַן אוֹפֶן פוּן “נִסֵּי נִסִּים” (לָשׁוֹן רַבִּים) הֶעכֶער אוּן הֶעכֶער אוּן נָאךְ הֶעכֶער:

…. Thus, the “supra-natural” behavior of every Jew in a manner of “revealed wonders” – open and manifest to all around, will hasten the fulfillment of the prophecy: “As in the days of your liberation from Mitzrayim will I show you wonders…”

… אוּן דִי “נִסִיםְ’דִּיקַע” הַנְהָגָה פוּן יֶעדְן אִידְן, אַ הַנְהָגָה אִין אַן אוֹפֶן פוּן “נִפְלָאוֹת אַרְאֶנּוּ”, אַז דָאס אִיז אָפְן אוּן אַנְטפְּלֶעקְט פַאר אַלֶעמֶען, וֶועט נָאךְ מֶער צוּאַיְילְן דִי עֶרְפִילוּנְג פוּן: כִּימֵי צֵאתְךָ מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם אַרְאֶנּוּ נִפְלָאוֹת …
